Three and a half charts for a total rewards career

The 3.5 Charts That Will Save Your Total Rewards Career (And Your Sanity)

After years of drowning in compensation analytics, I've made a simple discovery: 90% of our questions can be answered with just 3.5 chart types.

Yes, really.

While everyone else is creating 34-slide PowerPoints with violin plots that nobody understands, you can become the office hero with these simple visuals:

📈 Line Chart - "The Time Traveler" Shows where you're going. Headcount trends, salary progression, costs over time. If it moves through time, it gets a line. Simple.

📊 Bar Chart - "The Battle Royale" Department vs department. This year vs last year. Performance ratings. Bars = comparisons. When you need to know who's winning, bars never lie.

📊 Histogram - "Bars with Attitude" It's still bars, but now we're looking at distributions. How many people earn what? Where do performance ratings cluster? It's frequency analysis dressed up to look sophisticated.

🎯 Scatter Plot - "The Detective" The correlation hunter. Turnover vs pay. Performance vs compensation. When you see high pay + high turnover in the same spot, case closed. Each dot should represent a group, not individuals (unless you want privacy nightmares).

That's it. That's the entire toolkit.

While others are drowning in heat maps and waterfall charts, you'll be the person who actually answers the question: "So what does this mean?"

The dirty secret? Complex charts often hide simple truths. The best insights come from asking basic questions with basic visuals.

📈 Lines show trends 📊 Bars show comparisons

📊 Histograms show distributions 🎯 Scatter plots show relationships

Master these four, and you'll solve 90% of compensation puzzles while everyone else is still figuring out how to read their violin plot.

What's your go-to chart for cutting through the noise?
