Microsoft Copilot Cowork at $99 a month

Microsoft just launched Copilot Cowork bundled in at $99/month - AI product built on someone else's engine - then removed the three features that make it work.

Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic's Claude. Same agentic architecture. No local file access. No project instructions. No code execution.

What remains is an M365 orchestrator. It reschedules your meetings, compiles PowerPoints from emails, assembles research memos from SharePoint. A genuine improvement over the old Copilot chat model - longer attention span, background execution, multi-step sequencing across apps.

The question is whether that improvement justifies a new product category and a new price tier.

Here's the thing about buying an engine and removing the drivetrain: you still have to push the car. Claude Cowork and Codex Desktop read your entire project folder, carry persistent instructions that define how the AI reasons about your domain, and run actual scripts in a sandbox. They compute. Copilot Cowork starts every session from a blank prompt and gives each user an isolated assistant with no shared context.

A finance controller can't point it at a cost model on their drive. A supply chain manager starts from scratch every session. An analyst can't run a regression or generate charts. Five people on the same team get five separate assistants with no common memory.

The fair counterpoint: Work IQ - the intelligence layer that reads your M365 graph - is a real capability neither Claude nor Codex have. Enterprise governance is real. For IT teams managing compliance at scale, these matter. But they matter to procurement, not to the person trying to get work done.

One tool runs a regression across four countries and produces 54 charts. The other reschedules your Tuesday standup. Both are called "Cowork."

Run the spec comparison yourself before signing E7. Pilot alternatives for your power-user cohort. Negotiate from the gap, not from the pitch deck.
