# Anthropic Subscriptions Offer 5x+ More Value Than OpenAI

Tier B (Useful, limited): SemiAnalysis industry analysis by Dylan Patel's team with a documented meter-measurement method across nine providers, but results sit behind its paid model and the final section is paywalled.

Summary based on the full text.

## In short

A SemiAnalysis newsletter post (5 October 2026) by Andrew Megalaa, Max Kan and Dylan Patel that measures the real usage limits of AI subscription plans from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, SpaceXAI, MiniMax, Moonshot, Z.ai, Cursor and Cognition. They convert each plan's limits into the dollar value the same usage would cost at API prices. On the mid-tier models both labs market as daily drivers, Claude plans give about 5x the value of OpenAI plans, after OpenAI halved its $200 plan's limits.

## Key numbers

- ~5x: API-equivalent value of Claude plans vs OpenAI plans at the mid-tier models (Opus 5.5 vs GPT 6.1 Sol)
- 10% / 40%+: share of Anthropic revenue from subscriptions vs share of inference compute they take
- ~$36M: reduction in Anthropic's blended revenue per MW attributed to subscriptions
- -369% vs 1%: estimated gross margin at full utilisation for maxed-out Opus 5.5 vs Fable 5.1 usage

## What it reports

- Subscriptions are about 10% of Anthropic revenue but take over 40% of inference compute, lowering blended revenue per MW by about $36M.
- At the top tier, limits are similar: a $200 Anthropic plan still has 50% left after $2,485 of Fable 5.1 use, while the OpenAI plan is exhausted after $2,897 of GPT-6 Astra.
- Opus 5.5 on Claude plans gives about 5x the API-equivalent value of GPT 6.1 Sol; the gap holds on raw token counts.
- OpenAI halved tokens per model tier on its $200 plan; Sol-class API-equivalent value fell over 50% because cached-input prices were also cut. Old plans keep prior limits until 29 October.
- OpenAI's new $500 plan gives only 21% more Astra than the old $200 plan.
- Price cuts: Opus 5.5 input and output down 20% vs Opus 5 and cache reads down 60%; Anthropic raised token limits about 20% (Max) and about 50% (Pro), not enough to offset.
- At 92% API gross margins, maxed-out Opus 5.5 vs Fable 5.1 usage implies -369% and 1% gross margins at full utilisation; 6% and 80% at 20% utilisation.
- One of three test accounts had about 20% lower limits; the provider confirmed an "extremely tiny" A/B test.

## How they got it

Repeated API-style calls designed to use one token type at a time (input, cache write, cache read, output), using War and Peace excerpts and a technical essay as prompts, while recording how far each plan's usage meter moved. Rates were measured until the range was within ±5%, converted to tokens per 5-hour and weekly window, then priced using SemiAnalysis's own September agentic usage mix.

## Limits

- Value depends on the workload mix assumed; SemiAnalysis uses its own usage ratios.
- Token efficiency per task is not measured, and the third-party plan comparison and dashboard are paywalled.
- Providers change limits silently and run A/B tests, so figures are a snapshot.

## Why it matters for companies

Flat-fee AI subscriptions are heavily subsidised and the subsidy can be withdrawn overnight, as OpenAI's 50% cut shows. Companies budgeting seat licences for coding or agent tools should model cost on API prices as a fallback and recheck limits regularly. Comparing plans by headline price is misleading: value depends on which model and what token mix the team actually uses.
